The Artist:

Melissa Cable creates wonderful and innovative jewelry items using leather as her medium. The Indiana Bead Society is excited to have her come to Indianapolis for a weekend where she will lead us in three fun, fast-paced days of working with leather to make various jewelry projects and leather beads. A piece of her work is featured in the August/September 2017 issue of Beadwork Magazine.

Classes open to all current IBS members. Classes filled on a first come first served basis. Registration is due by October 1.

Classes:

Create Recklessly with
Fashion Leather
Oct. 13, 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM
$100 ($60 Class | $40 Kit)

You will cover the basics of leather fabrication such as cutting and hardware setting. Melissa will also teach more advanced techniques such as fold forming, stamping, inlays using beads and crystals, and painting and dyeing leather. After experimenting with several techniques, you will choose your personal project from one of the samples or you may create your own design. You can also explore ways to incorporate beadwork into leather for those students that are proficient in bead weaving.

Melissa has so many great designs and jewelry pieces to choose from, you will want to make more than one or two, so join her for a second day and use different materials to explore this new medium.

Kit Fee $40 - The kit includes 3 colors of leather and access to scrap and one hardware kit for the project of your choice. Instructor will email you prior to class to pick your colors. All the tools you will need are provided for you to share at the class.

Leather Beads
Oct. 14, 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM
$100 ($60 Class | $40 Kit)

Melissa will demonstrate how to create three different leather beads. Each student will make one of each of the beads. Students will then pick their favorite bead to create a project or make different styles of beads to create a sampler necklace. Melissa will discuss how these same bead techniques can be used with bead weaving or polymer clay, making them a versatile technique.

Kit Fee $40 – The kit includes 3 colors of leather, glue, thread, paint and other hardware for making sample beads. Please bring wood craft spools, 3/8” wood dowel and 2” felt ball (other sizes over 1” will work) and large bead caps that fit on the ends of your chosen felt ball, deep cap to hold a leather tassle. You may also want to bring chain or beading wire to complete a necklace. All the tools you will need are provided for you to share at the class.

Create Recklessly with Vegetable Tanned Leather
Oct. 15, 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM
$100 ($60 Class | $40 Kit)
Experience Level: Intermediate

This class is similar to Friday’s class except that it uses vegetable tanned leather to explore all that leather offers in creating jewelry designs.

Kit Fee $40 - The kit includes leather and one pack of hardware for the project of your choice. Instructor will email you prior to class to pick your metal color and to suggest focal ideas and optional clasps for bracelets. All the tools you will need are provided for you to share at the class. Bring 7mm flatbacks or crystal rivets if you’d like to add crystals as shown in the sample.
